ERODE: A 12-year-old elephant was electrocuted after it came into contact with an illegal electric fence that was erected around a farmland near Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) here on Wednesday.
Forest authorities have picked up Rajendran, of Pasunapuram near Sathyamangalam, for erecting the illegal electric fence that killed the elephant. He is a farmer.
According to forest officials, Rajendran had leased the farmland to another person to cultivate maize. “Since animals such as wild boars and elephants used to stray into the agricultural land, which is located close to the tiger reserve, Rajendran initially erected a barbed fence. When elephants broke the fence and entered his farm to raid the crops, he connected the fence to a power supply line,” a forester said.

On Tuesday night, the elephant attempted to enter his farm and came into contact with the fence with high voltage power supply. The pachyderm died on the spot.
Upon seeing the carcass of the elephant on Wednesday morning, other villagers alerted the forest officials, who picked up Rajendran for questioning.
