KOLKATA: The state government has given a go-ahead to Jadavpur University to introduce 90% reservation for domicile candidates while the remaining seats will be left open for other students – a decision which was forwarded to it by the executive council in March. As per the decision, domicile reservation will be applicable from 2019-2020 academic year in the engineering faculty, for the general seats only. The number of seats available for other reservations will not be reduced due to the decision.

There are approximately 1200 seats in engineering faculty in JU out of which 45% is for reserved candidates (SC, ST, OBC, PH and others). “The domicile reservation will be applicable for the remaining seats,” said the source.

Modalities of the domicile reservation will be decided later. JU will also have to define the term domicile. They may include the central government employees under the definition. “Also, we will have to decide what will be the status of refugees and those who may have shifted outside the state after living in Bengal for a long time,” the source added. Under the domicile definition as approved by WBJEE – candidates staying in Bengal over the past 10 years and permanent residents of the state are considered domicile.

“We have received the approval from the state government on Thursday. The modalities of admissions will be fixed by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board,” said dean of engineering faculty, Charanjib Bhattacharya.
