Fake insurance officials cheat senior citizen

Vadodara: A senior citizen has registered a complaint of cheating against three persons at Makarpura police station accusing them of selling him fake insurance policy.
. Sixty-seven-year-old Satish Kumar Bhatt told the police that in January 2012 he had got a phone call from Daksh Mehta who said that he was calling from a private insurance firm. Mehta offered a scheme to Bhatt and said that it will help him earn quick money.
Mehta told Bhatt he will have to first pay Rs one lakh. After two days, a man came by reference of Mehta and said that he had come to collect Rs one lakh. Bhatt filled up the insurance policy form and gave a cheque of Rs one lakh to the man. Two days later, Bhatt got his policy papers. A year later, when Bhatt was asked to pay Rs one lakh premium for two more years to continue the policy, he sought to withdraw the policy.
Later in 2015, Bhatt had got a call from one Umang Mathur who said that he was calling from Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDA). Mathur told Bhatt that the latter was eligible for getting Rs 8.12 lakh as per market rate for his policy. Mathur, however, told Bhatt that he will have to pay a premium of Rs 1.04 lakh first. Bhatt then deposited a cheque in the bank account number given by Mathur.

In 2018, Bhatt again got a phone call from Ved Prakash Arora who too promised to get the complainant’s money back. Arora told Bhatt to first pay income tax and registration fee as per government norms. Arora gave Bhatt the bank account number of Vinit Singh Arora. Bhatt deposited more money in the bank account throughout 2018. However, when Bhatt didn’t get his money back, he approached the Makarpura police and filed a complaint.
“The accused cheated Bhatt by using the name of IRDA. We will be investigating the case by tracing the phone calls that were made to Bhatt. Also, we will dig out the details of the bank accounts in which Bhatt had deposited money,” said H M Ramavat, Makarpura police inspector.
