Nagpur: Sixty underprivileged children were oozing with joy when they visited for the first time the laboratory of Professor Rajendra Singh Science Exploratory and learnt how scientists work and equipment are used for conducting various experiments at its South Ambazari Road facility on Thursday.
A 12-day workshop was organized for children belonging to lower strata of the society, in association with NGO Vardan, to mark fourth anniversary of the exploratory.
Workshops were conducted in various parts of the city like Kachipura, Itwari railway station, Bhandewadi Plot area, Gajanan Nagar, Manewada and Rameshwari in which 200 students, who have no formal education, learnt science with fun as the teaching was based on practical training.
Children had their moment of joy as they were taught the lessons depending on their age. Teachers taught them science on day-to-day basis. They were amazed to learn why a circle is 360° and not 1,000 and why water boils at a certain temperature. They were taught several simple tips to understand science.
Trainer and founding member of the exploratory Shilpa Sathi interacted with students and took a class on biology. She taught students how to communicate in a better way and reassured them that they are becoming better and better every day as they learnt how to look at things with a scientific approach.
Chief executive officer Madhavi Kavishwar said, “We are working with Vardan since last year. Several workshops were conducted for children since last month. Parents of these children are contract workers in different cities. Therefore, these children don’t have a formal schooling.
“In fact, some of the parents are in jail and the children are living with their relatives where many of them are subjected to abuse. The organization is also providing scholarship to selected students for education till Std XII.”
The NGO has mentored around 1,000 NMC school students since last year. This year too, it took classes for them from Monday to Thursday.
