White House wanted USS John McCain 'out of sight' during Trump visit

McCain is making waves in the media.

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday (May 29) that U.S. Navy officials in Japan were asked to move the warship during a recent visit by President Donald Trump.

The request reportedly came from the White House.

The McCain was named partly after the late Arizona senator, a critic of Donald Trump and subject of his attacks.

According to the Journal, Trump was scheduled to give a speech nearby and the White House wanted the destroyer quote "out of sight" It said a tarp was hung to cover the ship's name and its sailors were given the day off.

Trump responded to the report tweeting he had nothing to do with the plan.

A source in Washington confirmed the navy had received the request but said it was scrapped by some of its senior officers.

According to a Navy spokesman, the tarp was taken down, and all ships were in quote "normal configuration" for the president's visit The USS John S McCain was named not only after the late senator - but also his father and grandfather - both admirals in the Navy McCain was shot down, imprisoned and tortured during the Vietnam War.
