KOLKATA: The state on Tuesday again replaced Bidhannagar police commissioner — third time in three days — naming Bharat Lal Meena, who was the Siliguri police commissioner, for the post. On Sunday, when EC informed the state that the Model Code of Conduct had lapsed, the state had immediately reinstated Gyanwant Singh as the CP of Bidhannagar. Singh was on Monday made the ADG (law and order) and Nishat Pervez was asked to replace him. On Tuesday, Meena was asked to replace Pervez, who stays back as the DIG (CID-operations).
The Tuesday order, involving 43 senior IPS officers, was also to comply with the Calcutta high court’s May 22 directives to shift out senior Howrah police officers for their alleged role in the April 24 fracas outside Howrah court involving cops and lawyers. Howrah CP Vishal Garg will now be the IG (Presidency range) and Tanmoy Roy Chowdhury, the Burdwan range DIG, now returns to his old post as Howrah police commissioner. With Meena moving out, Gaurav Sharma will replace him as the new Siliguri commissioner.
The major rejig, however, was in Kolkata Police where Murli Dhar was promoted to joint CP (traffic), Neloo Sherpa Chakraborty as the joint CP (operations) and Subhankar Sinha as the joint CP (special task force). Mitesh Jain will be the joint CP (armed police). While Ajoy Prasad, the Malda SP, will now be DCP (south east division), Biswajit Ghosh will be the DCP (east division) and Sudheer Kumar Neelakantam will be DCP (central division). Dinesh Kumar, Kolkata Police’s reserve force DCP, will replace Aloke Rajoria as the West Midnapore police superintendent. Rajoria will take over as the Malda SP.

In another key transfer, Amit Javalgi, who was Bidhannagar police’s DCP (headquarters), was made the Intelligence Branch special superintendent. He will be replaced by Kunal Agarwal, who was a CID special superintendent. While Prasun Bandopadhyay will be the South Dinajpur police superintendent, Nagendra Nath Tripathi, Amitabha Maiti and Sukhendu Hira have been posted as SPs of Alipurduar, Kalimpong and Hooghly (rural), respectively. Tathagata Basu will be the Jalpaiguri police superintendent.
While the transfers were dubbed as “routine”, the pace at which the Mamata Banerjee government has issued the orders is unprecedented. On Sunday itself, Anuj Sharma was reinstated as the Kolkata Police commissioner and the next day, on Monday, Alapan Bandyopadhyay was appointed as the state home secretary.
