BHOPAL: With just a month left for the onset of monsoon, the nullah channelisation and maintenance proposal is gathering dust at civil department of the BMC. Mayor Alok Sharma had proposed Rs 3 crore for nullahs channelisation and maintenance work. Last year the Mayor had staged a sit-in near Saifia College following waterlogging in area due to overflowing nullah.

Water logging a recurring occurrence every monsoon but the authorities have failed to take concrete step to fix it. There are as many as fifty waterlogging- prone spots in state capital. Overflowing nullaha makes for sensational pictures every year after a heavy shower. Every year before the arrival of rains, the municipal administration is required to clear the nullah of garbage and silt.

Poor drainage system on road and water spilling from overflowing nullah spills on roads and floods the residential areas. Over ten small and big nullah along Saifia Nullah overflows during rains causing huge inconvenience to people. Mayor had demanded that proper maintenance of the nullahs on stretch between Peer gate and Bhopal talkies.

Sharma had demanded that the maintenance work of the nullah be given to a single agency as involvement of different departments delays the project. Area near Peer Gate and stretch from Bhopal talkies to Nariyalkheda and Bairasia road are the worst affected.

The Mayor had proposed channelisation and maintenance of nullahs and a DPR was too prepared. It was then proposed that the project would be initiated before the rains next year, i.e. 2019. However, monsoon, is just a month away and the proposal and DPR are biting dust somewhere. Even if the project is taken up now, it would be too late and work would not be completed before the rains arrive.
