Inspector Jagjit Singh, the SHO of Singh police station, said they had initiated inquest proceedings under the Criminal Procedure Code. “The deceased hails from a family of farm labourers. The deceased had stopped working a few months ago. The family said he had been addicted to the drug for two years,” the SHO said.

The mother of the deceased, who spoke to TOI but refused to give her name, said they tried get Naib treated for addiction to heroin. “We even him to doctors, but all went in vain. On Monday evening, he left home on the pretext of meeting some friends, but did not return. We were worried all night. By the time we decided to look for him, some villagers spotted the body and informed us,” she said.
Locals claimed that police were not taking any action against drug peddlers, who were distributing drugs in the village. They said a few days ago some villagers had objected to some peddlers selling drugs to youth, but police did not take any action. The SHO refuted the claim.
