SURAT: More than 60 teams carried out major demolition work, removing dome and temporary
sheds from top of the buildings in city for the third day in a row. At number of places, the civic body officials also applied for closure of buildings that were found to be flouting fire safety norms.
Officials visited nearly 86 sites, of which majority were school buildings. They removed
illegal domes and sheds built on top of the terraces and freed nearly 2.08 lakh sq feet of space of encroachments. These include 19 spots in Limbayat, 10 in Varachha zone B, 13 in Varachha zone A , 12 in Katargam and 10 in Athwa zone of the city.
Along with this, officials also removed 2,394 flex
banners displaying advertisements of different types across the city. Maximum of 682 banners had been removed from the central zone and 363 from Udhna zone.
In Katargam zone, officials visited 11 sites of schools and classes and removed dome-like structures and temporary sheds from the terraces. They also collected Rs 27.30 lakh as administrative charges from the sites from where dome and sheds were removed. These include Mouni International school at Utran, whose student Rudra Donda was one of the 22 unfortunate victims of fire tragedy at Takshshila Arcade on May 24.
“The work for removal of illegal parts of the structures will go on till city is freed of these structures. We will ensure that everybody complies with fire safety norms and construction bylaws,” said M Thennarasan municipal commissioner. He further said that seven days time has been given to properties running tuition and other such classes to fix fire safety measures. “If they don’t comply, we will severe their water and drainage connections,” he warned.
