The Vashi police have arrested a doctor who worked on a contract basis at the NMMC Hospital in Vashi for allegedly molesting a 25-year-old intern.
The police said the accused, who has been identified as Anurag Tarwade (32), asked the victim to accompany him to the mini seashore in Vashi at 7.30 p.m. on Monday. “The accused was her senior and she couldn’t refuse his invitation. So she decided to go along with him,” said police inspector Sanjeev Dhumal.
According to the complainant, the accused offered her beer at the mini seashore, but she refused to drink it. The accused then consumed the drink and started misbehaving with the complainant. “He tried to hug and kiss her, but she rejected his advances, pushed him back and left the place. She went back to the hospital, but the accused followed her and tried to touch her inappropriately,” a officer from the Vashi police station said. The intern filed a complaint with the hospital authorities and later approached the police and registered a formal complaint.
“We arrested him on Tuesday. The accused is married and his wife is pregnant,” Mr. Dhumal said. She told the police that the accused often made her feel uncomfortable, but this was the first time he had tried to molest her. The accused was charged under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354 A (sexual harassment) and 354 D (stalking) of the IPC.
