Rajini lauds Modi for poll win; exhorts Rahul Gandhi to stay

CHENNAI: The Lok Sabha election results are an endorsement of Narendra Modi's charismatic leadership and not a vote for the BJP, actor Rajinikanth said here on Tuesday. While a pro-Modi wave propelled the BJP to power at the Centre, an anti-Modi wave ensured victory of the opposition in Tamil Nadu, he said.
After Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and A B Vajpayee, Modi was another charismatic leader with mass support in the country, Rajinikanth said and confirmed that he would attend his swearing-in on May 30.
Rajinikanth also had a word of praise for Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and said he should not step down from the post but should stand firm and prove himself. "I won't say he (Rahul Gandhi) lacks leadership quality," the actor said.
‘Senior Congress leaders have not worked hard to win LS election’
The actor said, “In my observation, senior Congress leaders have not worked hard (to win the elections).” He added that in a democracy the opposition was as important as the ruling party. It should also be strong, he said.
He congratulated veteran actor and old friend Kamal Haasan and his Makkal Needhi Maiam for a good show in the LS polls. “Within 14 months of launching a political party, garnering nearly 4% votes is a remarkable achievement. My wishes to Kamal and his party,” he said.

He, however, ducked a question whether his party would be in the fray in the 2021 assembly election. “In India, be it at the Centre or state, victory (in elections) depends on the charisma of the leader. The Lok Sabha polls victory is a win for theindividual leadership of Modi,” Rajnikanth said and drew a comparison between Modi and leaders such as K Kamaraj, C N Annadurai, MGR and J Jayalalithaa to drive home his point. When there is a political wave, no one can withstand it. Those who join the bandwagon reap the benefits, he said.
Opposition parties in TamilNadu managedtocarry outsuccessfulcampaigns on issues such as NEET, Sterlite and hydrocarbon exploration, which played a crucial role in the poll outcome, he added. He also appreciated Nitin Gadkari’s statement on linking Godavari-Pennar-and Cauvery rivers to resolve the water crisis of Tamil Nadu despite the BJP’s poll debacle in the state.
