Gurgaon: The state government on Monday approved a proposal for bus routes connecting Gurgaon with Delhi and Faridabad. This comes days after a glitch on Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line forced stranded passengers to walk on the roads leading to Gurgaon and exposed the lack of alternative public transport between these cities.
According to officials, they will initially roll out bus routes connecting Gurgaon with West Delhi covering areas such as Dhaula Kuan, Dwarka and Rajouri Garden. The proposal was placed before chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar by Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL) and was approved by him.
“We have written to the state transport authority on the issue of permits for commencing a bus service to Delhi and Faridabad. A meeting was held with officials of the authority in this regard. Once the permits have been granted, we will start the route planning,” said a GMCBL official. He added that they were also developing a mechanism to help with citizens with feedback on these routes.
The connectivity between Gurgaon and Delhi will come as a massive relief for commuters but will also likely benefit GMCBL by increasing ridership numbers. Other than routes to Delhi and Faridabad, GMCBL will soon roll out buses between Gurgaon and Manesar. “The route connecting Manesar and Gurgaon is under consideration and we should be able to roll out buses on this route in the coming months,” said the official.
The chief minister has also asked for introduction of women-only buses on certain routes during peak hours to avoid inconvenience to women passengers.
“We are working out the feasibility of women-only routes, according to his directions. We should be able to start this service, as well,” said the official.
As of now, GMCBL runs buses on six different routes within the city and has a total of 81 buses. Its revenue has seen improvement with the introduction of new routes. Eventually, the bus service plans to run 500 buses on 25 routes in the city. In the first stage, 200 buses will be launched on 11 routes, including the six routes which are operational now.
GMCBL officials have claimed that these 200 buses will be launched by the summer of 2019. However, with delays in the launch of routes, the deadline seems a little too ambitious.
At the current pace, GMCBL will be able to roll out only 100 buses by the end of this summer. Meanwhile, the GMCBL officials are monitoring the performance on different bus routes and tweaking routes to ensure profitability of the bus service.
