NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old farmhand died in
mysterious circumstances in Outer Delhi’s Bawana police station on Sunday. Balraj Singh was called to the police station for questioning regarding the whereabouts of Rahul, 22, his absconding son, who is a suspect in two cases of attempt to murder and a case of murder.
While cops said Balraj jumped to his death from the third floor of the building, his relatives claimed he was threatened, thrashed and intimidated through the day. “We suspect he died while being beaten up by police. They are now trying to turn it into a case of suicide,” Sunil, another son of his, said. Balraj’s sonin-law, who had married on May 17, was also allegedly detained and beaten up.
Police, who denied these allegations, have initiated disciplinary action against an assistant sub-inspector and a
constable who were supposed to keep an eye on Balraj.
Death in police station: One cop suspended pending inquiryThe judicial magistrate was informed about the incident and a probe was being conducted by an SDM, police said.
Family members claimed Balraj, a resident of Bajitpur Thakran village near Bawana, was not in touch with Rahul, but was called to the police station for questioning.
According to police, the incident took place around 7.30pm on Sunday when Balraj was asked to sit at a room in the police station after being questioned about the whereabouts of his son. DCP (outer, north) Gaurav Sharma said Balraj was being quizzed in presence of his sonin-law and some other relatives.
After questioning, Balraj went to the third floor balcony on the pretext of looking for water and jumped from there, police claimed. No suicide note was found from him. His body has been sent for an autopsy at a government hospital after this. The autopsy was conducted by a panel of doctors, Reports are awaited. Police officers, said, a preliminary probe suggests Balraj died after falling from a height.
His family members, however, alleged he was taken to the police station around 11am by two policemen when no one else was at home. “After sometime, my mother was also called for questioning. Around 7pm, I got a call from my father. He appeared shaken and pleaded with me not go to the police station even if I recieved a call from the cops. He said that he was thrashed and I would be attacked too if I went. He kept asking me to save him,” Sunil claimed.
Balraj used work at a farm while his wife is a labourer in a factory. Sunil said when he called Balraj up around 7.20 pm, his phone was switched off. Later, he received a call from the police station informing him that his father had committed suicide. “I was in Faridabad when the incident happened. None of our family members were allowed to see Balraj,” Sunil said.
Constable Praveen has been suspended, while assistant sub-inspector Gajender has been sent to police lines.
Rahul, 22, is allegedly involved in two cases of attempt to murder and another case of murder. He had allegedly shot at one Monu Bajitpuria and fled from the area. Following this, Rahul’s cousin was shot dead.
