Allahabad: As a severe heat wave swept the state, Allahabad in eastern Uttar Pradesh became second hottest city in India on Tuesday with the maximum temperature spiraling to 47.3 degrees Celsius, just a few notches below Chandrapur in Vidharbha, which touched 47.8 degrees Celsius.
According to the IMD weather station at Ghurpoor, Naini, Tuesday was also the
hottest day in Allahabad with the minimum temperature at 27.5 degree Celsius.
Although the temperature hovered around 46 degrees and above for several days, Tuesday saw the mercury cross the 47 degree mark. The last time, temperature came close to 47 degree was on May 10, when the city recorded a maximum of 46.8 degree Celsius, while the minimum was 28.8 degrees. “For past five days, the city experienced extreme hot conditions, but on Tuesday, the temperature broke all records to touch 47.3 degrees Celsius,” said Prof Suneet Dwivedi of department of Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Allahabad University. “There would be no weather change in coming days with the mercury sticking to 45-46 degrees and although the city would be hit by intermittent dust storms, residents would continue to suffer till pre-monsoon showers arrive,” said the expert. Markets and parks wore a deserted look throughout the day and people ventured out only late evening. Likewise, commuters were seen battling the heat with umbrellas, caps and cotton scarfs. “The conditions are such we cannot go out for shopping during Ramzan and it’s only at night that we go out to buy for the next day. It’s a like a heat curfew till late evening,” said Nasreen Fatima, a local of Atala.
