PATNA: Six bike-borne
criminals looted Rs60 lakh from an employee of a
rice dealer near the
Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in the state capital on Monday.
The incident took place around 1.15pm when Santosh Kumar, an employee of Sant Kirana Store at Agamkuan, was on way to deposit the money in a bank located on the Rajendra Medical Research Institute premises.
Police said six criminals on three motorbikes waylaid Santosh near Kali temple, a few yards away from the bank, and snatched the bag containing cash at pistol point. When the victim tried to raise an alarm, one of the criminals threatened him with dire consequences. The criminals fled the spot on their motorbikes.
Santosh immediately informed his employer Prashant Kumar over phone who, in turn, apprised senior police officers of the incident. Santosh used to deposit the money in the State Bank of India on a regular basis, an investigating officer said.
Patna SSP Garima Malik said the police have taken the daylight robbery in the city as a challenge. “A special investigation team under the leadership of SP (east) has been formed to nab the criminals and recover the looted amount at the earliest,” she said.
The employee told the police that the cash couldn’t be deposited on Saturday as the bank was closed. “It seems the criminals knew about the huge cash collected from petty dealers,” a senior police officer quoting Santosh said.
On getting information, City SP (east) Rajendra Kumar Bheel reached the spot. Police also quizzed Santosh at the Alamganj police station when he reached there to lodge a complaint.
The incident took place only a few hours before a
Paliganj trader was threatened with dire consequences for his failure to pay Rs5 lakh as extortion to a local gangster. The victim, a wholesale potato dealer, has sought police protection as he apprehended threat to his life.
