Paper was slightly different and time-consuming: teachers

The Joint Entrance Examination Advanced paper held on Monday turned out to be tougher than what the students expected. While the section on chemistry was easy, physics was moderately tough. Mathematics was the toughest.

Teachers expected the paper to be tough. “It was slightly different from the previous paper and students had to spend more time answering each question,” said Pawan Kumar, physics teacher and FIIT-JEE director. Students had to answer 108 questions: two sets of 54 questions (18 in each of the subjects) in paper 1 and paper 2.

Ashuthosh Bharadwaj said physics questions were “well-framed.” The exam was significantly tougher, he said. “Maths questions were much more advanced. This time, IIT Roorkee has set a benchmark for toughness.”

According to Vidyut Balaji, the question paper’s format was clear and there was no confusion. It took time to understand the maths question. “It wasn’t like really, really hard but among the hard papers,” he said. For these students, the quality of questions mattered.“A lot of the questions were enjoyable to solve. It didn’t seem harder than usual but it felt like there have been easier papers. It felt really different,” Vidyut said. Balaji Sampath of Aha Guru said since students had to do calculations, the maths section was harder.
