BENGALURU: A public interest litigation (PIL) filed before the Karnataka high court has sought for a direction to the authorities to consider teaching & non-teaching staff of private unaided colleges & schools as 'intellectual labour' and accord them permission to form their own unions and also to recognize such unions.

Ranganatha Gowda, who works as Assistant Professor and a resident of Tumakuru has filed this PIL.

According to him, there are 200 engineering colleges and about 40,000 unaided schools in Karnataka, and more than 25,000 lecturers are working in the said engineering colleges on permanent & temporary basis, and more than 2 lakh teaching & non-teaching staff are working in the unaided schools.

He adds that the managements of these institutions are run by influential persons who are not at all concerned about the welfare of the teaching & non-teaching staff.

He further says that the staff in these institutions are not paid properly and the rule of equal pay for equal work is not at all applicable to the teaching & non-teaching staff of private unaided colleges & schools, and their status is not more than that of bonded labour.
