The bill is in, the brakes are on: Victorian state budget

The Andrews Labor government has put the brakes on big new spending and building initiatives in its fifth budget as it begins the task of keeping its campaign promises and paying for the huge policy agenda it took to last year’s election.

Senior economics correspondent Shane Wright calls it a budget built on tunnels, babies and migrants.

Traffic heavy on Ballarat Road

Only one lane is open to inbound traffic on Ballarat Road in Ardeer at the site of an alleged hit-run last night.

Inbound traffic is heavy and currently pushed back to the M80 Ring Road, according to a VicRoads spokesperson. Drivers are advised to consider alternatives, like taking the West Gate Freeway.

Meanwhile, the road remains closed for outbound traffic. Drivers who need to access the M80 could take Furlong or Boundary roads.

Three dead in overnight crashes

Three people have died in two separate crashes overnight, bringing the state's road toll to 137 - 49 more than the same time last year.

The latest deaths were at Mount Eliza on the Mornington Peninsula, where two people were killed in a crash on the Nepean Highway about 11pm. The driver and passenger of the north-bound vehicle died at the scene. The male driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Earlier in Red Cliffs near Mildura, a car carrying three men in their 20s left the road and hit a pole. One of the passengers died at the scene. The other two men were taken to hospital.

A young woman bashed to death in a Melbourne park had been at a social gathering hours earlier with the man accused of killing her. Friends who had been at the gathering with 25-year-old Courtney Herron came forward and led detectives to the man now charged with her murder, The Age understands.

In other news, the Morrison government is ramping up pressure on Labor to support a bipartisan approach to energy and emissions policy as it rebuffs critics of its climate change plan; and a safety upgrade of Melbourne’s City Loop that was meant to cost $43 million has blown out to cost more than three times its original estimate, the state budget has revealed.
