PATNA: The surge in temperature is giving a tough time to the
traffic police while regulating vehicular movement in the city. They suffer from dehydration, fever, heatstroke and headache while standing all day long under the sun.
However, some
cops have taken various preventive measures to beat the heat and stay hydrated during the
summer. Some of them drink coconut water, wear masks and work on rotation basis.
A traffic cop at Dak Bungalow crossing, Anjani Shukla, works on rotation basis with his fellow
policemen. He works between 8am and 2pm, which is the peak time for vehicular movement.
Some cops are even falling ill due to the increase in mercury. A female traffic police, Jyoti Kumari, at Dak Bungalow crossing recently suffered heatstroke while on duty.
Ram Badan Prasad, who works 12 hours a day at S P Verma Road traffic junction, said, “I suffer from headache and body pain everyday when I come home after my shift gets over.”
Shiv Prasad Kushwaha, whose duty is on Bhattacharya Road crossing, complains of not getting summer relief kits from the higher authorities. “Sometimes, the city residents and college students offer us coconut water and masks as a goodwill gesture,” Kushwaha said.
A woman constable in the same area said she avoids drinking proper amount of water during summer as there is no public toilet for women available in the area.
Another cop at Hartali Mor, Shankar Kumar Singh, said, “We only get masks when any advertising company comes to promote their product. Otherwise, nobody cares for our health.”
