SRINAGAR: A 16-year-old boy was killed and another teenager injured after a mortar shell went off in north Kashmir’s
Bandipora district on Monday. Officials said the boys were playing in an open field when they spotted the shell and started fiddling with it.
The shell was found in Chuntiwari area of Gurez in Bandipora. The boys have been identified as Amjid Ahmad Mapnoo (16) and Istiyaq Ahmad Lone (15) of Nayel village.
The boys were rushed to a nearby hospital where Amjid was declared brought dead. Istiyaq was referred to
Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment.
Rahul Malik, SSP Bandipora, the exact nature of the explosive will be clear during investigations. Sources confirmed that it was an 81mm mortar shell. A case has also been registered.
