MUMBAI: Tenants of Esplanade Mansion, a UNESCO heritage structure at Kala Ghoda, are to be forcibily evicted if they refuse to move out by May 30—a deadline set by the Supreme Court.MHADA has sought police protection to vacate the dilapidated structure between May 31 and June 3.
Officials said the building has 193 tenanted units, of which only two have been vacated. The units include law offices, other commercial enterprises and residences.
A famous unit is the Army Restaurant, which, along with other shops, was served notices by the BMC on March 21 and 23 asking them to stop carrying out business as they were putting lives at risk.
Recently, an IIT panel said, “Repairs will be dangerous as many structural elements of the building are not rigidly connected to each other… It will be prudent to demolish Esplanade Mansion.”
