‘LDF convener’s remarks helped’

UDF MP elect Ramya Haridas and LDF’s lone winner in Lok Sabha polls A M Ariff in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday
Thiruvananthapuram: UDF MP elect Ramya Haridas, who wrested Alathur Lok Sabha constituency from the CPM by a huge margin, has said that LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan’s controversial remark against her won more votes for her, especially that of women.
“I felt very bad when such a remark came from a person holding a respectful position. But I went ahead strongly and people of Alathur, especially women, stood with me. They accepted me as a representative of ordinary people and took a decision in my favour,” Ramya told reporters at a meet the press organized by Thiruvananthapuram Press Club on Monday.
Ramya said she registered the case against the LDF convener after consulting with the UDF leadership as she wanted to be ‘the last victim’ of such attacks against women who are new in political contests. “I cannot accept the remark even if it was a political one rather than a personal one,” she said on the reported explanation by the LDF convener.

She also said withdrawal of the case against Vijayaraghavan could be possible only after consultation with the UDF leadership.
Asked about her politics beyond the victory as a UDF candidate in a Lok Sabha constituency, she said she would be working more like a people’s representative rather than a party woman.
