Let the ski season begin!

There's snow on the alps, let the ski season begin! A grey, showery eight degrees in the city now. Here's where we'd rather be:

Odd spot

Archaeologist Jo Ann Van Tilburg is fed up with the legions of tourists converging on Easter
Island to sit on graves, trample preserved fauna and pose for "nose-pick" selfies with the island’s giant statues.

Visitors to Easter Island reached 150,000 last year, up from the annual 2500 in the early 1980s.

"There is a lack of genuine appreciation for the Rapa Nui (Easter Island) past," Van Tilburg says.

Cabinet: the winners and losers

In case you're really interested, here's a graph of the winners and losers:

Morrison's ministry reshuffle

In case you missed it yesterday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has named his new team in a post-election cabinet reshuffle.  Chief political correspondent David Crowe calls the shuffle "deliberately humdrum".

Ken Wyatt becomes Australia's first indigenous Minister for Indigenous Australians, Sussan Ley returns to cabinet as Environment Minister. Melissa Price was dumped from that role. Barnaby Joyce is no longer drought envoy, and apparently found out via Sky News:

Victoria's big build: Is your commute affected?

Both the Sandringham line and La Trobe Street are out this morning, thanks to various road and train projects throughout the city. There will be various works over the next few weeks. Check your commute in advance here:

On the trains

Buses will replace trains between Belgrave and Upper Ferntree Gully due to a track equipment fault.

Buses have been ordered but may take 10 minutes to arrive. Passengers have been asked to consider alternative travel options.

And they're still on the buses on the Sandringham line, thanks to works for the Metro Tunnel. Here's how work is progressing over there:

Traffic update

Updating the traffic thanks to the Australian Traffic Network and VicRoads:

  • There's a multi-vehicle crash in Laverton. A left lane is closed inb ound on the Princes Freeway, just before Kororoit Creek Road. Police are on the scene. At least six vehicle involved.
  • In Port Melbourne, there's a breakdown citybound on the West Gate Freeway at Todd Road.
  • And in Dandenong South, there's debris both ways on the South Gippsland Highway at Hallam Valley Road.

The weather, in tweets

Here's how it looked on the radar overnight:

And here's how they saw it in Hotham:

Yep. It's cold

It's beginning to feel a lot like winter. Last week's pleasant conditions look more like autumn's last embrace as cold fronts bring rain, snow and sleet for much of the next few days.

The weather bureau's Rod Dickson says this week heralds a return to normal programming, ie the onset of winter: "Quite often when we have a mild May it tends to shut off abruptly and we switch to winter".

It's been a rainy few days over Melbourne. The highest falls - 20-30mm - have been recorded in the Yarra Ranges, and there's been a 32mm mixture of rain and snow at Donna Buang. Most city suburbs received between 5-10mm over the weekend. There'll be more showers today, particularly over the south-eastern suburbs.

It's already snowing in alpine areas. The bureau expects snow down to 700 metres this morning. Places like Macedon may see some sleet but falls will improve during the week with possible snow at the same level on Wednesday.
