The Joint Director of the Pre-University board has become the latest victim of online fraud. A man posing as an executive of an online commercial website duped him of ₹20,000 on Saturday.
Akash S., who recently cleared the UPSC exam, wanted to purchase a T-shirt from a website, but could not make the payment. He called the customer care number seeking help. The executive, on the pretext of helping him, sought details of his debit card and PIN number before withdrawing ₹20,000 from his account.
The fraud came to light when Akash received an alert from the bank about the transaction. He called the number of the customer care executive, but it was switched off.
He filed a complaint with the Malleswaram police.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered an FIR under various sections of the IT Act and sought the help of the cyber crime police to track down the accused.
