AHMEDABAD: A major fire erupted at a chemical manufacturing firm in Sanand town of Ahmedabad district on Monday afternoon. No casualty nor any person suffered any injury in the incident, said officials of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES).
The fire erupted at around 2.30 pm on Monday at the unit—Nrup Reck Solvents and Chemicals in Uma estate nearly 1km away from Sanand toll booth. As many as 60 AFES personnel were put to the task of dousing fire in which 14 fire tenders were used, said city’s chief fire official, MF Dastoor.
It took nearly three hours to douse the fire but even after that it still felt like inferno around the unit, said Dastoor.
Another fire official said that the fire occurred due to some chemical leak and it spread across the unit wherein solvent and some other chemicals were stored. Due to heat, fire first caught solvent and then spread across and went out of proportion, said the fire official. The fire spread rapidly in the entire unit forcing the workers to rush out. As some of workers spotted the smoke and flames, they called up fire and emergency services and the AFES personnel rushed to the spot.

Fire official said that the vapour generated from the fire occurred in the chemical unit was hazardous and if a person had come into its contact, then he or she would have fainted immediately. However, as the unit was located in an open space, the vapour or smoke generating from flames did not harm anyone.
This is the second incident of fire in an industrial unit in Gujarat in this month. Earlier on May 27, a major fire broke out in a chemical unit in Vapi GIDC in which two workers suffered injuries.
