In what may turn out to be a big respite to the suburban rail commuters, the Chennai division of Southern Railway is all set to re-introduce fast local trains from June 1. The zonal railway had earlier cancelled the operation of fast local trains after the freak accident at St.

Thomas Mount railway station in July last year in which footboard passengers died after hitting the concrete fencing. The railway converted the fast-local services into regular services. A statement from the railway said that four fast local trains would be operated from Chengalpet to Chennai Beach and two fast locals from Tirumalpur to Chennai Beach during peak hours. “One fast local will run from Chennai Beach to Tirumalpur during evening peak hour. Due to the introduction of fast local, Chennai to Pondicherry express train which was operated from Chennai Beach will be operated from Chennai Egmore from June 1,” the release added. Sources claimed that the decision has been taken after the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) nod to operate the fast local again. The railway had already demolished the concrete fencing wall which had caused the accident.
