In one of the biggest raids against prostitution rackets in recent times, the Mumbai Police in the early hours of Saturday morning raided a brothel in Kamathipura and rescued 141 girls. A woman accused was injured while trying to evade arrest and is currently under treatment.
According to the police, the raid was conducted under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port Zone) Rashmi Karandikar from 2.30 a.m. to 6.30 a.m. on Saturday in a three-storey building. “We rescued 141 girls from the spot. They were being held in spaces with grilles to stop them from escaping,” Ms. Karandikar said.
The police also arrested 29 people, 19 of whom are women. Officers said that one of the women tried to escape during the raid by jumping from the first floor balcony of the building, and was injured. “The accused has been admitted to JJ Hospital for treatment and will be arrested after she is discharged,” a police officer who was part of the operation said.
The police are currently recording statements of all the rescued girls as well as 65 customers who were taken into custody from the building. An offence is being registered against the accused under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act, with the DB Marg police station, officials said.
