Street Seen: My style is Fran Drescher meets Penny Lane
ALICE JOHNSON, 23.
I AM IN Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.
I AM an executive assistant.
I AM WEARING my friend Emma’s disco-pink dress, paired with a coat I purchased from an op-shop in Albury while visiting my sister, the pink boots were a present for my 21st birthday and the earrings are by a local designer purchased from Design A Space.
MY STYLE IS
Fran Drescher from The Nanny meets Penny Lane from the film Almost Famous. A lot of colour blocking and a lot of (faux) fur trimmings are a must.
I ADMIRE THE STYLE OF my mum. She always wears whatever she wants and exudes confidence. I remember her dolled up to the nines to get a beer at the pub for casual Sunday drinks and thinking “that’s the kind of woman I want to be”. I’m also getting a lot of inspiration from a group of Danish fashion Instagrammers at the moment (check out @annejohannsen, @frejawewer and @mariejedig).
MY FAVOURITE PLACES TO SHOP I’m working on being more sustainable with fashion so I try to buy the majority of my pieces from op shops (the Salvation Army on Victoria Street in Abbotsford is my go-to) or through online digital markets like Depop. I also love Design A Space in Prahran and Fitzroy, and browsing the plethora of boutiques on Smith and Gertrude streets. Uniqlo for basics.
MY BIGGEST FASHION MISTAKE WAS when I was around 18 and going out and trying to look like everyone else. I was straightening my hair, fake tanning and wearing enormous amounts of makeup to blend in (not that there is anything wrong with this – it just was not me).
WHEN I WAS A KID I WORE lots of corduroy, matching sets and funky hats. So basically, exactly what I wear now.
I WOULD NEVER BE CAUGHT DEAD IN … non-applicable to me. I will try anything once.
