KOLKATA: A
student of Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, who was at the restroom with another friend in the wee hours of May 23, was attacked with a hammer by an unidentified assailant.
The incident that took place on the Medical College and Hospital (
MCH) premises has raised security concerns with the senior management of the institute promising to scale up security. The police said the victim — Asish Majumdar — has survived the murderous attack and received seven stitches on his head.
Police said Majumdar was at the PMO duty room 1, located on the third floor, when the incident was reported around 2.20am — hours before the counting began. Police said CCTV footages have established that someone had come from behind and hit him. Though his friend gave a chase, the accused managed to flee.
Bowbazar police said they have registered an attempt to murder case and are exploring all angles, including personal or old rivalry. They have also not ruled out the possibility of a political angle. “The probe has begun. As the election-related security drills are in place, we cannot share any detail right now,” said a senior officer of the division.
The victim, a resident of Santoshpur’s Survey Park, could not be contacted. TOI went to his residence but could not locate him there. His friends said that he was still recovering.
“We are using CCTV footage to track down the accused. In most cases, the crimes are committed by pickpockets. But this is a different case where we believe that the attacker knew the victim,” claimed an officer.
