Nagpur: There has been a spurt in the number of unexplained deaths in police records, especially on the roads, coinciding with the spiralling temperature in the city under the heatwave of ‘nav tapa’, which will last till June 2.
In the last few days, more than a dozen ‘accidental death’ cases have been registered at various police stations, with the deceased either declared brought dead at hospitals or passing away during treatment after being found unconscious on the roads. Police said many of the dead were also addicted to liquor, with some such deaths also reported at homes.
On Sunday, 32-year-old Karunakar Nimje was declared dead at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after police found him unconscious at a water pot near an autorickshaw stand. Sitabuldi police registered a case of accidental death.
Police sub-inspector PR Surkar of Sitabuldi police station said the real reason of his death would be clear only after post mortem report. “We have no clue whether he (Nimje) was addicted to liquor or had been on an empty stomach or had not consumed adequate water. Heat could one of the factors behind his death,” he said.
In another incident, also on Sunday, 49-year-old Ramchandra Nimje was found dead near an electronic shop at Binaki power house. He was known to be addicted to liquor. A case of accidental death was registered at Pachpaoli police station.
Also on Sunday, 35-year-old Rahul Nandeshwar was declared dead of unspecified causes at GMCH after being rushed there for medical assistance from his residence at Rambagh. A case of accidental death was registered at Imambada police station.
In another incident on Sunday, Akash, in his 30s, was found dead under a tree at Sharda Chowk, and a case registered at Kotwali police station.
A patient, 43-year-old Shreenayan Borkar, admitted to Mayo Hospital on May 24, was declared dead on Sunday. Sub-inspector Dr Kandekar of New Kamptee police station said Borkar was addicted to liquor. “He may have died of his addiction and also summer heat,” he said.
On May 25 too, a number of cases of accidental deaths were registered at different police stations in city. Sixty-four-year-old Tejram Borkar had fallen on the road after feeling giddy near Meshram Chowk bus stand on May 17, and admitted to Mayo Hospital. On May 25, he was declared dead. Sadar police registered a case of accidental death.
On May 25, 53-year-old Prashant Jhungate was found unconscious and later declared dead at Mayo Hospital. He was working as a private security guard at Ghat Road. Ganeshpeth police registered a case.
Sub-inspector Dhanashree Kutemate of Lakadganj police station said two cases of accidental deaths registered by her indicated strongly at the temperature factor. “In one of the cases, an unconscious beggar was found bleeding from the nose when police shifted him to GMCH. He was declared brought dead,” she said.
