Drive coordinated by Thuvakkam, supported by The Hindu

It was a “green” start to the day at the Indian Air Force (IAF) Station in Avadi, as officers, residents and volunteers came together to participate in a tree plantation drive.

The drive was coordinated by Thuvakkam, an NGO and supported by The Hindu. As part of The Hindu #UnderMyWatch campaign, readers were encouraged to drop off their newspapers. For every newspaper received, people were told that a sapling would be planted for a good cause.

Speaking about the initiative, Air Commodore J. Rajendra, Air Officer Commanding, said they worked keeping in mind the principle Vriksho Rakshiti Rakshita, where they believe that if people protect plants, plants will protect them back.

Earmarking areas

“We want to make this campus clean and green and with the help of Thuvakkam, we started the tree plantation drive in May. We are planting native species such as Neem and have earmarked several areas here which we hope to make greener,” he said. Members of Thuvakkam said they were happy about the support they had received as part of the initiative.
