GARDENING AUSTRALIA: WELCOME TO WINTER ★★★½
7.30pm, ABC
The star gardener is photographer Bill Henson, who invites Jane Edmanson into his lush walled garden in inner-city Melbourne. He makes some uniquely artist’s observations about the creation of his sanctuary. Elsewhere, Costa visits a backyard vegetable propagation in Toowoomba that is helping refugees reconnect with their homelands. And the lovely Millie delivers this sage advice for the weekend: "Find something, make something and grow something."
DROP THE GLOVES Series premiere ★★★½
11.30pm, SBS Viceland
Spoiling Canada’s reputation as a non-violent nation is this documentary about the brutal spectator sport of semi-professional ice hockey. Apparently it is a tradition in Quebec to cheer on players punching each other in the face. Mercifully, times are changing and so, too, must this practice. We hear a lot from players about the damage done and their fears about whether the sanitised version of the game will still attract the crowds.
50 FIRST DATES Movie ★★★
8.40pm, Nine
There’s nothing funnier than memory loss, according to Hollywood producers of romantic comedies. Directed by Peter Segal, this 2004 prime example of the genre belongs in the previous decade, with its cartoonish premise and predictable plot. Drew Barrymore as the heroine suffering a made-up condition that wipes her yesterdays, saves it with her adorable presence and sense of timing. Adam Sandler plays with ease the man who must woo her anew each day.
