Road expansion work disrupts water supply

Coimbatore: After the widening work of the Mettupalayam Road damaged pipelines, water supply has been badly affected in and around Bilichi village. As a result, residents of Bilichi, Mathampalayam, Chinna Mathampalayam, Karichipalayam and Onnipalayam are facing severe water crisis. While some of the areas were given water recently after residents made representations, residents in other areas continue to suffer.

“While the highways department dug up the road for the widening project, damaging pipelines, it is the responsibility of the panchayat to repair them and provide water. But it has not been done. Even borewell water was not supplied properly for two months,” said a resident of Kottai Pirivu near Mathampalayam.
During the work, pipelines from a water tank passing through a small bridge were damaged, the residents said. Attempts to reach the panchayat officials went in vain. tnn
