In a first, under ‘Padho Punjab, Padhao Punjab’, the Punjab Education Department was all set to organise its maiden Social studies fair in all Government Schools at school, block level and district level.
 

Till date, the Education Board had been organizing Science and Math fairs. It is for the first time that Social Studies fair aimed at teaching basic life skills and making learning easy would be organised. The three day fair would begin ‪from May 27‬ and conclude ‪on May 29.‬ Under this fair, the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Punjab has directed the students from class VI to X class to make projects with waste products showcasing maps, models, working models, 3D charts, basic skills, quiz competitions, globe usage, role of economics in human life and other projects.

A letter issued by Director SCERT Punjab shared that that the objective of organising this fair was to make the teaching and learning process vibrant and effective by devising easy, interesting and activity oriented methodology. State Coordinator English/Social Studies Harpreet Kaur said that apart from acquainting the practical side of Social Studies, the fair was also focused on teaching social skills to students. “Our society was fast turning volatile. It is important to teach the students about how to live in the society in a better way. Students need to learn about inter personal skills and unity in diversity”, she said.

She also shared that earlier Social Studies was confined to simple projects but this fair would help the students explore their talent through various practical projects. “A special ‘mnemonics technique’ about any topic of history, its important dates and significant people of that time with rhythmic details was another special feature, which would make learning easy for students”, she said. Apart from this, the students would also learn about various other skills like pottery, candle making, flower making, maps and planets, Harpreet Kaur  added. The Social Studies fair would be attended by members of panchayats, School Management Committees (SMCs), prominent citizens and parents, which would make them aware about the changing scenario of the government schools.
