The Wadala TT police have arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly beating his wife to death with his bare hands.
The police said that the accused, Sanjay Padihari, married Suman 11 months ago and the couple started living in Shastri Nagar in Sion. Senior police inspector Rajendra Sangle said, “On Wednesday evening, the duty officer at the police station received a call from a resident of the locality. He said that a couple was lying lifeless on the floor of their house. We sent our personnel to the spot and they rushed Mr. Padihari and Suman to Sion Hospital. Suman was declared dead before admission, while Mr. Padihari was admitted for treatment.”
Drinking problem
During interrogation, Mr. Padihari allegedly confessed to killing Suman during an argument on Monday. An officer, who is part of the investigation, said, “Mr. Padihari confessed that his compulsive drinking led to frequent arguments with Suman. His wife had been unwell for the past week and on Monday she picked a fight with Mr. Padihari for spending all his time drinking and not bothering to buy her medicines. Under the influence of alcohol, Mr. Padihari started beating her and ended up killing her.”
The officer said Mr. Padihari spent two days beside the body and then tried to kill himself on Wednesday. When Suman’s body started decomposing, neighbours went over to check the source of the stench and found the couple lying motionless, the police said.
Mr. Sangle said, “Following his confession, we have arrested Mr. Padihari and charged him with murder and attempt to suicide under the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded in police custody till May 28.”
