Ludhiana: After MLA Sanjay Talwar threatened to stage a protest over the issue of choked sewerage on Rahon Road, the MC officials seem to have finally swung into action.
The dyeing unit owners have already been asked to keep their units closed for one week and a separate sewerage line has been proposed along the stretch for reducing the burden on the main line.
However, it is yet to be seen if whether the residents living in colonies along Rahon Road would get the desired relief as previously too the cleaning of the sewerage line proved to be a failed attempt as the problem still exists. There are over dozen a residential colonies situated on Rahon Road, including Jai Singh Nagar, Chander Lok Colony, Jainnagar, Sarwan Park, Naginder Nagar, Guru Vihar, Tilak Nagar, Baldev Nagar, Subhash Nagar, New Sarwan Park etc. In May 2017, work on cleaning the drainage line using super suction machines was taken up. However, the main sewerage line is back to getting choked, with all the efforts wasted.
When contacted, MLA Talwar said, “I had decided to start a protest against the MC, but mayor Balkar Sandhu has assured me that this problem will be resolved, so I have postponed the idea. Let’s see if people will get the promised relief.”
Meanwhile, superintending engineer of operation and maintenance cell Rajinder Singh said, “We have planned laying of 9-km long sewerage line starting from Bajra till Bhattian directly and estimates will be prepared. After getting the required sanctions, we will start the work.” He said that due to excess water coming into the main sewerage line, the dirty water stagnates on the road. Describing the ordeal, businessman Iqbal Singh Mann, who too had staged a protest over the issue a few days ago, said more than two years have passed since they have been complaining about this problem, and that the from the past one-and-a-half month, the choking has intensified. He added that even the water supply is contaminated in the area so he brings drinking water from his home.
