Says he will strive to implement plans in his manifesto

MADURAI

Su. Venkatesan, who has been elected Member of Parliament from Madurai constituency, on Saturday said that he would work together with everyone, cutting across party lines, for the development of Madurai.

Addressing the media here, he said that the CPI (M) was always at the forefront when it came to development and public welfare and would not hesitate to work with elected representatives from other political parties.

On Madurai North MLA V.V. Rajan Chellappa’s recent comment that Mr. Venkatesan would not be able to implement any developmental schemes since he belonged to the Opposition party, the latter said that India was not an autocracy.

“Ours is a democratic country. Those who appreciate democracy will recognise the important of Opposition’s role,” he added. On the MLA’s remarks that the MP could only construct bus shelters, Mr. Venkatesan said that bus shelters were absolutely necessary, particularly around Periyar bus stand. “Thousands of people, including mothers with young children, are waiting under a scorching sun for buses,” he said.

Stating that he would strive to implement all the plans proposed in his manifesto, Mr. Venkatesan said that one of the first things would be to form an Advisory Committee for Madurai constituency’s development, comprising people from different walks of life, as promised in the manifesto.

He thanked the public, leaders and CPI (M) workers and those from coalition parties for his victory with a comfortable margin over AIADMK’s V.V.R. Raj Satyen. He also thanked government officials, teachers and police personnel for their work in conducting the election.
