"I couldn\'t go for skydiving because of my weight"

Losing weight is not an easy battle but it is not made any easier when you have people constantly commenting on how you look or worse, stopping you from doing something because of your weight. Sample this. A software engineer, Kandarp was not allowed to skydive because he was overweight, which was extremely disheartening for him. Nonetheless, he took it as a learning lesson and decided to lose weight for good.
With dedicated efforts and strong willpower, he shed all of the weight in all of four months. Read his story to know how he did it:

Name: Kandarp Jani

Occupation: IT Software Engineer

Age:31 Years

Height: 5'11"

Highest weight recorded:93.8 kilos

Weight lost: 14 kilos

Duration it took me to lose weight: 4.5 Months

The turning point: I am very passionate about adventure sports. However, being overweight did not allow me to enjoy my hobbies. When I went for a sky diving adventure last year, I was turned away because they only allowed people who weighed less than 90 kilos. The incident made me very sad. I did not ever want to be barred from doing anything because of my weight. I started thinking about medical problems and decided to change for good. That is when I decided to kickstart my fitness journey.

My breakfast: I always prefer a very light but healthy breakfast. I prefer lentils, sprouts, Idli, Poha, Upma or any salads. I like my breakfast to be light and healthy. I prefer eating lentils, sprouts, poha or upma. I have also started eating salads in the morning.

My lunch: I have a regular Indian lunch which contains roti, dal, vegetables or on some days, I eat khichdi. Something which I have definitely cut out from my meal is rice, which I do not think I have had since January this year.

My dinner: I eat my dinner rarely. Rather, I fill up by having a heavy, protein-filled lunch which keeps me fuller for longer. So, in a way, I followed intermittent fasting to lose weight. I also avoided all kinds of carbonated, soft drinks and junk food. I really miss eating cheesy pizzas though!

Although sometimes, I give into my sweet cravings and have a bit of my favorite sweet or chocolate at night.

My workout: My workout regime is a mix of cardio, aerobic exercises, HIIT and strength training exercises.

For the first couple of months in my weight loss journey, I was solely doing cardio. The only difficult part for me was to fix up a routine. Once I did that, it got easy to lose weight.

When I lost the extra fat, I started doing weight lifting, low and moderate intensity exercises too. All of this greatly made a difference in my waistline.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Spinach khichdi is one of my favorites and great for weight loss!

Pre and post-workout meals: Any high protein and fiber bar or a handful of dry fruits do the trick for me.

Fitness secrets I unveiled: It is all about confidence and staying motivated. In the past, I have tried several times to lose weight and spent so much time and money on it but just couldn't do it. However, this time, I was really confident about myself and accomplished the mission.

How do I stay motivated? I invested in smart watch and Netflix. Exercise targets on smart watch app really helped. I invested in a smart watch which helps me keep a check on the number of steps I take every day. Slowly, my targets increased too. I also watched a lot of shows while working out which kept me going.

My wife also motivated me and inspired me to get fitter every day. I am very grateful for her support.

How do you ensure you don’t lose focus? I followed the concept of a target chart. I started by making small targets and it was easy to stick to them. This really helped.

What’s the most difficult part of being overweight? Limitations everywhere, be it by selecting clothes, playing, eating, photos.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? Being able to do whatever I want to do in a fit and healthy shape.

What are the lifestyle changes you made? I was getting up early in the morning around 6:00 AM and go to sleep early around 10:00 PM. I tweaked my sleep schedule and this greatly helped. I woke up early, went to bed early. Also, I stopped eating 2-3 hours before going to sleep, especially carbs.

What was the lowest point for you? Thankfully, I never really reached a low point in my life. However, I never wanted people to point out my weight and mock me. So, that was the biggest motivator for me.

Lessons learnt from weight loss: I realized that nothing is impossible in life and you can achieve when you are strong and dedicated.
