Spinning mill fire brought under control after 10hrs, no casualties

Coimbatore: Fire and rescue personnel doused a major fire that broke out at a spinning mill at Irugur near Singanallur in the city on Saturday after 10 hours of struggle. Several lakh-worth yarn and threads were destroyed in the fire. No causalities were reported.

Workers of the mill had noticed smoke emanating from a corner of the mill around 8:30am. After failing to put out the fire, they informed the Peelamedu fire service station. Firefighters from the station immediately rushed to the spot. As the fire was spreading fast, two more water tenders from Sulur and Coimbatore south fire service station were brought to the spot.
The spinning mill did not comply with the fire safety norms, a firefighter involved in the operation told TOI. “It was the main reason for the delay in putting out the fire. They had stored yarn and thread bundles from wall to wall. Not enough space was given even for ventilation. As water was not stored at the premises, water tenders had to travel to a distant place to re-fill tanks,” he said.
