NEW DELHI: Describing PM
Narendra Modi as the “most popular leader” on the world stage and “mahanayak (
superhero)” of BJP’s big win, party president
Amit Shah told supporters on Thursday that the mandate reflected an endorsement of nationalism and a defeat of the opposition’s reliance on “tukde-tukde” thinking.
Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Shah hit out at opposition parties which had opposed it in the elections, saying the mandate had buried the politics of “casteism, dynasty and appeasement”.
“This is a victory of every worker of the party. This is a victory of BJP government’s policy of ‘sabka sath, sabka vikas’ and, of course, victory of Modiji’s popularity,” Shah said amid chants of “Modi-Modi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.
He reiterated the BJP campaign theme that opposition parties had formed opportunistic alliances only to defeat Modi, and said the party was fighting for 50% votes and had managed to achieve its objective in 17 states, including UP and Bihar. “Congress faced a crushing defeat and it could not even open its account in 17 states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha,” he said.
Shah said the victory was “historic” as it was after 50 years that a PM was returning to office for a second consecutive term with a majority.
He took a jibe at former partner N Chandrababu Naidu whose TDP lost the assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh. “Had Naidu worked hard in the elections, TDP could have performed better and opened its account,” Shah said, referring to consultations among parties to form an anti-BJP front.
About BJP and its ally Apna Dal winning more than 60 seats in UP even after the SP-BSP alliance, Shah said, “The mandate is a strong message against dynastic and casteist politics, which is going to lose its existence. The 21 dynastic parties were roaming around Delhi questioning exit polls to create confusion among people.”
Reference to BJP’s performance in West Bengal saw jubilant party workers raise chants of “Jai Shri Ram” after which Shah repeated “Bengal ke andar” at least six times, all occasions greeted with applause.
“Over 80 people have lost lives their lives in West Bengal in the last two years while working for BJP’s expansion in the state. Even after so much violence and rigging, BJP won 18 seats in West Bengal,” he said.
He also lauded the party’s victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and
Chhattisgarh.
