Humpback whale trapped in rope off Barwon Heads
A humpback whale is trapped in rope off the Victorian coast, south-west of Melbourne, with crews frantically attempting to free the entangled mammal.
Local fisherman spotted the whale on Friday morning off Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Specialist staff from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning [DELWP] and Fisheries Victoria are working to untangle the whale, though impending weather conditions may impede the rescue effort.
DELWP commander David Misfud said "the initial plan is to attach a buoy to the whale to assist with tracking the whale".
"We ultimately hope to free the whale by late this afternoon, however, prevailing weather conditions may hinder efforts."
The department reminded boaters, jet skiers and swimmers that whales are protected under state legislation and they must stay at least 50 metres away from whales at all times.
"Members of the public are urged to stay clear of the whale, for their own safety and for the mammal's welfare," said Mr Misfud.
