Areas in Beijing suffered from extreme weather, including hail and strong winds, from 17 May to 20 May causing losses of millions of yuan.
According to preliminary statistics, as of 17:00 on 20 May, insurance agencies in Beijing received 3,000 motor insurance claims, with an estimated total loss amount of CNY21m.
Crops in Tongzhou, Shunyi, Mentougou, Fangshan, and Daxing were damaged and 4,800 rural homes hit, according to a report in China Times. Insured agriculture losses amounted to CNY50m from 430 claims with a total estimated damage sum of nearly CNY50m.
Strong gusts fell several trees and blew down walls, causing several deaths.
The Beijing Banking & Insurance Bureau urged insurance companies to speed up the processing of claims, and to pay compensation without delay to the insured.
The Bureau has also issued a notice to remind financial institutions to carry out extreme weather safety work.
