Caste away, Hans in tune

NEW DELHI: Singing praises of PM Narendra Modi worked wonders for Hans Raj Hans in the North West Delhi constituency. His winning margin of 5.5 lakh was nearly five times what party candidate Udit Raj got in 2014.

There was a minor controversy early on about his caste in a seat reserved for the SC community, but he outraced AAP’s Dalit face, Gugan Singh, and Congress candidate Rajesh Lilothia. Sufi singer Hans had joined BJP in 2016, after tying his political prospects first to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), an NDA ally in Punjab, and then to Congress. AAP and Congress used the “outsider” narrative against Hans, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal even claiming Hans was “ineligible” to fight from a reserved seat because the singer had “converted to Islam recently”.
Rubbishing such allegations, the BJP candidate invoked the name of PM Modi to take 60% of the votes. Lilothia of the Congress got a boost when the axed BJP MP Udit Raj promptly joined it. This and votes from the unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters gave Lilothia 16.9% of the votes, third behind Gugan Singh’s 21%.
