UK politicians react to PM Theresa May's resignation

ROUGH CUT.

NO REPORTER NARRATION.

British politicians reacted to departing Prime Minister Theresa May's resignation on Friday (May 24) - with former prime minister David Cameron saying he felt "desperately sorry for her".

Fighting back tears, Theresa May announced her resignation, setting up a contest that will install a new British prime minister who could pursue a cleaner break with the European Union.

She said she would quit, triggering a contest that will bring a new leader to power who is likely to push for a more decisive Brexit divorce deal.

May set out a timetable for her departure: she will resign as Conservative Party leader on June 7 with a leadership contest in the following week.

In an emotional speech, the Prime Minister said it was now clear to her that it was in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead efforts to deliver Brexit.
