GANDHINAGAR: Just four of the 12 sitting MLAs who had been nominated by parties for the 2019 general election have emerged victorious. While all four MLAs nominated by the BJP pulled off victories, all eight MLAs fielded by the Congress lost. Bypolls will now have to be held on four assembly seats,
Tharad, Kheralu, Amraiwadi and Lunavada, as the BJP MLAs of these seats will be sworn in as members of Parliament.
Kheralu MLA Bharatsinh Dabhi, who was nominated by BJP for the Patan LS seat, defeated Jagdish Thakor of the Congress by 1.94 lakh votes. Tharad MLA and state minister of state for irrigation and water supply Parbat Patel won the Banaskantha seat, defeating Parthi Bhatol of the Congress by 3.68 lakh votes.
Amraiwadi MLA Hasmukh Patel, who was fielded by the BJP on the Ahmedabad East LS seat, built an unassailable lead over Patidar leader and PAAS spokesperson Geeta Patel, who was the Congress candidate. Lunavada independent MLA Ratansinh Rathod, who was fielded by the BJP from the Panchmahal LS seat, took an insurmountable lead of 4.14 lakh over V K Khant of the Congress. Rathod was an independent MLA, but had extended his support to the BJP.
All the eight sitting MLAs that the Congress had fielded as LS candidates lost the election.
