Nilgiris Lok Sabha Election Results 2019: Election in Nilgiris constituency was held on April 18 in the second phase of Lok Sabha election 2019. Polling in 38 out of 39 parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu was in the second phase. AIADMK's M Thiyagarajan, DMK's A Raja and M Ramasamy of TTV Dhinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) were the key candidates in the fray in 2019 polls.
Actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan's party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) also fielded its candidate Rajendran from Nilgiris constituency.
Final Result: DMK's A Raja wins over AIADMK's M Thiyagarajan by a margin of 205823 votes.
Nilgiris Lok Sabha constituency profile
The seat was formed in 1952 and is reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled caste community. AIADMK's C Gopalakrishnan was the sitting MP who defeated DMK's A Raja in 2014 general elections by a margin of more than 1 lakh votes. However, in 2019, AIADMK has pitted M Thiyagarajan against DMK's A Raja. The two major parties in Tamil Nadu — AIADMK and DMK — entered into an alliance with a number of parties for the forthcoming elections. AIADMK contested the election in alliance with BJP, PMK, DMDK, Tamil Maanila Congress, Puthia Tamizagam, Puthia Needhi Katchi and NR Congress. Whereas the DMK has aligned with Congress, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK, VCK, IUML, KMDK and IJK. Among the key poll issues in the state, employment and degradation of the environment were important election issues in the state. Nilgiris Lok Sabha election results in 2014, 2009 and 2004 2014: C Gopalakrishnan (M) of the AIADMK received 463700 votes. He thrashed A Raja (M) of the DMK who secured 358760 votes. 2009: Andimuthu Raja (M) of the DMK received 316802 votes. He defeated C Krishnan (M) of the MDMK who only got 230781 votes. 2004: R Prabhu (M) of the Congress received 494121 votes. He thrashed M Mathan (M) of the BJP who secured 257619 votes. The victory margin was over 2.5 lakh votes.
The state of Tamil Nadu has 39 parliamentary constituencies out of which seven are reserved for SCs (Sriperumbudur, Chidambaram, Rasipuram, Pollachi, Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Nagapattinam). However, no seat is reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the state.
In 2019, EC had cancelled the election in Vellore constituency after a large sum of cash was allegedly seized from a DMK candidate's office in Vellore, therefore, out of 39, polling took place in 38 Lok Sabha constituencies only.
