PUNE: Sunny Leone had the last laugh, albeit unintentional, on Twitter on a day when the entire world was waiting for the results of Lok Sabha elections in India.

Just as the counting began early on Thursday morning, TV channels started giving by-the-minute updates of the counting process in the 542 constituencies. In the mayhem, a prominent TV presenter absent-mindedly informed the viewers that Sunny Leone was leading in Gurdaspur. No points for guessing that he meant Sunny Deol, and he immediately apologised for the gaffe.

But that slip of tongue mentioning the Bollywood actress was enough to give Twitterati a comic relief from the heavy duty counting statistics of politicians. Memes and jokes started making the round immediately, with a condom company releasing a tongue-in-cheek creative in the micro-blogging platform saying, “We understand she is always on our mind as well. #TheNationKnows”.

And Leone’s tweet, “Leading by how many votes?”, won a billion hearts -- again!

But by and large, Twitter belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday.

Narendra Modi tweeted with #VijayiBharat and all the ‘Chowkidaars’ followed suit, making it the most used hashtag of the day.

Tweets supporting the political party followed from prominent personalities including Bollywood artists, sportsmen, and world leaders. #ModiSweep and #ModiAaGaya were trending throughout the day.

Amethi and Smriti Irani were also trending owing to Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s defeat from the Congress bastion. Collatoral damage was when cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu had earlier said that he would resign if Gandhi lost Amethi seat and Twitterati rushed to remind him to keep his word.

Political leaders and winners from all over the country came out to wish Modi on his party’s massive success and as a result, the phrase ‘congratulations sir’ was also trending in India.
