British PM May in peril over Brexit on EU election day

Britain's embattled Prime Minister is facing ever-increasing pressure to name a date for her departure.

Theresa May's final Brexit gambit failed and fuelled calls for her to step down.

A result likely to overshadow a European election that will show a United Kingdom still riven by divisions over its EU divorce.

Media reports suggest Theresa May will announce she'll quit on Friday (May 24).

The British leader was dealt yet another blow on Wednesday night after Leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom resigned - Further deepening the Brexit crisis and sapping an already weak leader of her authority.

A prominent leave supporter, Leadsom said she could not announce the new Withdrawal Agreement Bill in parliament on Thursday as she did not believe in it - A deal which offered the prospect of a possible second referendum and closer trading arrangements with the EU.

The opposition Labour party joined in - saying this fourth attempt to get May's Brexit deal approved by parliament should be shelved.

And the PM should leave office to offer a new leader a chance to reset the dial.

The chairman of the powerful Conservative 1922 Committee, which can make or break prime ministers, told lawmakers May planned to campaign in the European poll on Thursday (May 23) - before meeting the group on Friday to discuss her leadership.
