Election Results 2019: Lack Of Congress-AAP Alliance Paves The Way For BJP In Delhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party fought the elections riding on star power, fielding former cricketer Gautam Gambhir and singer Hans Raj Hans.

The Aam Aadmi Party and the Indian National Congress had put an end to speculation in April by ruling out the prospect of an alliance to fight the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Delhi. They nominated candidates for all seven seats in the capital, paving the way for a three-cornered contest.

Exit Polls

The poll of polls had predicted the BJP to hold fort in Delhi even as three exit polls indicated Congress winning one seat from the national capital—something they failed to do in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

What Happened In 2014?

In the last general election, the BJP had recorded a landslide win by emerging victorious in all the seven seats. AAP, which had won 67 of the 70 seats in the state’s assembly polls five months prior to the 2014 general election, could not win a single seat in the previous Lok Sabha polls.

Voter Turnout In 2019

The national capital recorded a voter turnout of 60.5 percent in the sixth and the penultimate phase of voting, down from 65.2 percent in previous Lok Sabha election.

Key Constituencies And Candidates

  • BJP’s Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Environment Harsh Vardhan leads the constituency of Chandni Chowk by close to 50,000, while Congress’s Jai Prakash Agarwal trails behind.
  • Congress is trailing in Delhi’s north east constituency, where BJP’s state-unit president Manoj Tiwari is expected to beat former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and AAP’s Dilip Pandey. Tiwari leads the 2019 elections by close to 2 lakh votes. He had won in 2014 by a margin of 1.4 lakh votes.
  • AAP’s Atishi Marlena is trailing from the east Delhi seat as BJP’s Gautam Gambhir leads the constituency by a margin of over 1.3 lakh votes and Congress’s Arvind Singh Lovely trails behind.
