Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh is leading from Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow constituency in the 2019 general election.

Singh, who was home minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet, was ahead of the Samajwadi Party’s Poonam Sinha by 1,27,995 votes.

The Lucknow seat is considered a bastion for the BJP, which has not lost the seat since 1991. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee won from the seat for five consecutive terms. While Singh is considered a political heavyweight, his opponent Sinha recently joined the SP and is contesting for the first time.

In 2014, Singh, who was BJP president before Amit Shah took over, defeated Congress’s Rita Bahuguna Joshi by a whopping margin of over 2.7 lakh votes.
